Over Spray Removal Service

Q. What is Over Spray, anyway?
A. Simply put, over spray is paint on paint. It happens when you’ve happened to park your vehicle near a building or house being painted. You don’t have to be very close as over spray can be carried by the wind quite a distance. It looks like a fine mist, usually all over the vehicle. If the paint happens to be the same color as your car, it may be first detected by feel. Running your hand over the surface of the vehicle is all it takes to make you look closer.
Q. How is it taken off my car?
A. The unfortunate thing about over spray is that it is often time consuming and difficult to remove. It must be done properly, with no harsh methods or solvents, to ensure no damage to the vehicle’s paint. Over the years I’ve developed a safe and sure method for over spray removal. First, the vehicle is thoroughly washed to remove any dirt or debris from the exterior surfaces. We then dry the exterior surfaces and proceed to remove the over spray contaminants using a fine, medium or high grade clay and water based media. This process can be used on every part of the exterior of the vehicle including trim, glass, chrome, wheels and plastic headlight or tail light lenses. After the contaminants have successfully been removed from the exterior surfaces of the paint; the exterior is once again washed & dried. We then apply a polymer sealant or wax (customer preference) to the exterior insuring the surfaces are protected. Many customers have stated that the over spray turned out to be a good thing in that they never realized their car could look so wonderful!

During the past 18 years I have worked as a professional automotive detail technician; I have learned many different processes regarding removal of over spray from painted surfaces. Clay is by far the safest & most reliable process available. Many detailing shops will use high speed buffers/polishers to remove the contaminants from the paint/clear coat. This is absolutely the most damaging method available & I do not recommend anyone allowing this process to be used upon their vehicle.
Why, do you ask?
The use of a high speed buffer relies on the heat generated between the buffer pad (wool or foam) and the vehicle surface to remove the over spray from the paint. There was a time many years ago when this was the best process to use. During more recent years it has been proven to be the most dangerous in that it will drastically shorten the life of a clear coat or paint.The heat that is generated with the buffing pad creates such a friction that it causes the clear coat/paint to break down much more than normal polishing would during a general exterior detailing process. Heat is generated to remove the contaminants & at the same time .1-.2 millimeters of clear coat can easily be removed. This means that the protection of the clear coat/paint surface has greatly been reduced and will have a much shorter life expectancy before requiring a repaint. Typically, automotive manufacturer paint consists of 1.5 – 2.0 mils of clear coat and 4.0 – 4.5 mils of base coat. A high speed buffer can easily remove 50% – 75% of the clear coat thickness with a single compound polishing process. Q. Just how much is this process going to cost me? There is a price range, depending on the type of over spray and how heavy it is, as well as the make, model and year of your vehicle. This service is $200 & up depending on the severity. Just come by for a quick written estimate; which can be submitted to the painting company responsible or to your insurance. We will gladly work with either.

Although we at Shade Tree Auto Detailing dedicate ourselves to achieving the VERY best results possible with each & every service performed; there are times where the exterior paint may already be past the point of correction short of repainting. There are also times where interior stains, either new or old, may have become permanent due to the age or contaminant causing the stain. We have the means to recondition the majority of vehicles we come in contact with, but there are times where the damage to the interior or exterior of the vehicle is beyond reconditioning & in need of replacement.
